As you may be aware, Bill C-68 to amend the Fisheries Act was tabled in the House of Commons on February 6th, 2018. The amendments contained within Bill C-68 seek to address the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Canadian Coast Guard’s mandate to restore lost protections and incorporate modern safeguards. The Bill was drafted based on input provided to date through the review of the 2012 changes to the Fisheries Act by Indigenous groups, provinces and territories, stakeholders, and the public. You can read the text of the Bill and follow its progress through the stages of the parliamentary process on the House of Commons website LEGISinfo: http://www.parl.ca/DocumentViewer/en/42-1/bill/C-68/first-reading. Overviews of the proposed changes to the Fisheries Act and of the parliamentary process are included in the attached documents.
We will be hosting a technical briefing for the ENGO community in Corner Brook on Thursday, March 8th from 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM Newfoundland time to: (1) share the contents of the Bill; and (2) explain the parliamentary process, including opportunities to comment on the Bill. If you are interested in attending the technical briefing or participating remotely via conference call, please contact Zachary Bartlett at Zachary.Bartlett@dfo-mpo.gc.ca or (709) 772-6174, by 4:00 pm on Wednesday, February 28th.
We remain available should you have questions regarding Bill C-68.
