Harry’s River counting fence – Summer 2006

In 2006 SPAWN hired students with funding from Service Canada to work at the Upper Harry’s River trap located near the community of Gallants, in western Newfoundland. The trap provided statistical data that will be correlated with data gathered from Lower Harry’s and Pinchgut tributary traps in previous years.

This year DFO is using a video capture system for monitoring the trap at Gallants…At night it will record images in infra-red. All information will be recoded on 12 hr tapes which will be processed daily to ascertain the migration. Here’s a couple of pictures taken inside the on-site trailer: Using this system the fish won’t be handled. Given that when the peak run is on there is a distinct advantage to using this system because the fish aren’t crammed into the trap…they have free access to move on up-stream, unhindered and un-handled.
